Do Timing Chains Need to be Replaced in My Land Rover?

Your Land Rover is a complex piece of kit under the bonnet. With a host of parts, all working together, it’s almost inevitable that one or two may occasionally need to be replaced or repaired. One question we are often asked at RCV is whether you need to replace the timing chain in your Land Rover. To be honest, there is no right or wrong answer here. A timing chain can last for over 200,000 miles if you look after it. Meaning it is unlikely you’ll ever need to change it while you own the vehicle.

That being said, reaching out to a Land Rover specialist when you hit the 100,000-mile mark is always a good idea. That way you can have it thoroughly checked over and know whether it’s got plenty of life left in it, or if it’s on the way out.

What is a timing chain?

A timing chain is a metal chain fitted with teeth that attach themselves to the wheels and gears that power your engine. When the vehicle is being operated, the chain synchs the rotation of the camshaft and crankshaft. It pretty much makes sure that parts of the engine work in harmony and gives you a functioning vehicle.

It sounds a bit like a cam belt, is the timing chain the same?

Pretty much. A cam belt, or timing belt is made of nylon chords whereas a timing chain is made of metal. Both have their benefits and both have their drawbacks. For example, a cam belt will stretch over time which then makes it become less reliable. A timing chain on the other hand needs oil to function properly. If oil pressures are too low, the tensioners that keep the chain taut will start to fail, which leads to the chain getting slack and not operating how it should.

Does my Land Rover have a timing chain or a timing belt?

It’s a bit of a mixture! It depends on the model and age of your Land Rover. New models tend to have a timing chain rather than a belt, however timing belts are commonly found among many models.

We’ve put together a brief outline of which Land Rover models have a timing chain, and which ones have a timing belt. Please note, we have not included all models.

Timing Belt Timing Chain
Land Rover Freelander (2001-2006) Land Rover Discovery 3 (2005-2009)
Land Rover Discovery 2 (1998-2004) Land Rover Discovery 4 (2009-2016)
Land Rover Range Rover P38 (1995-2002) Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2005-present)
Land Rover Defender (pre-2007) Land Rover Defender (post 2007)
  Land Rover Discovery 5 (2017-present)

If you are unsure, or cannot see your model listed here, you can look under the bonnet and investigate.  See a plastic cover on the right or left of your engine, your Land Rover will have a timing belt. Find no cover and it means you have a timing chain. However, for added reassurance, you can always ask a Land Rover mechanic.

How will I know when to change my timing chain?

If you have looked after your timing chain properly, you can easily get 200,000 miles or more from it before it needs replacing. However, faults can develop, so it is recommended you have your timing chain or belt inspected every 80,000-100,000 miles. If you notice any of the following problems, it might be time to have your chain replaced:

  • Your Land Rover won’t start.
  • The engine warning light comes on.
  • You hear a rattling sound when driving.
  • The engine misfires.

Should your Land Rover have a timing belt and not a timing chain you might notice the same problems but also hear a squeaking noise coming from the engine.

If you detect any of these issues, you should look to book a service with your local Land Rover service centre.

Is it expensive to replace a timing chain in a Land Rover?

It can be. The cost is determined by the model, but it has been known for timing chain replacements to cost up to £1,000 and beyond. Luckily at RCV, we always endeavour to keep costs down and offer customers prices up to 40% lower than main dealer prices. If you think your timing chain needs replacing, give us a call and we’ll be able to give you an accurate price or your Land Rover model.

Can I replace the timing chain myself?

You could, and as much as it may sound that we are just asking for custom, it’s not advised. The location of the chain and the intricate nature of the replacement means that it’s easy to make a mistake. Should you not replace the chain properly or accidentally cause damage elsewhere, you could find that the repair job costs you much more than the cost of a replacement timing chain.
